Amish Couture: Hommes

The men and women that subscribe to this trend will be noticeably different from one another. The men of the amish culture today wear fairly plain clothing that is easy to work in, easy to clean and easy to make.

The style of the Amish men will primarily stay they same. The colours will be basic and the style will be sharp. However there will be a heavier focus on the basic, classic style.

Feature One: Tailoring

The men of the trend will dress fully in tailoring. Made to measure trousers and blazers with sharp shoulders and strong lines will be the centre piece of the trend.

Feature Two: Couture

The 'Couture' side of the trend will be fairly subtle for the male members and be introduced using metallics and gem stones. This will mainly feature through accessories which draw inspiration from nature and the wilderness, reflecting the Amish 'back to basics' way of life, mixed with the new changed world.

Feature Three: The Beard

The current Amish men do not shave their beards and grow them as long as possible. Beards will heavily feature as a part of the Amish Couture Homme trend, however there will be a modern take on the Amish style. Instead of leaving the beards untrimmed and messy the Amish Couture men will use sharp lines and styles to match that of the sharp tailored suits. This will be a reflection of the 'back to basics' lifestyle, but basics meaning that of sharp lines and shapes, rather than mess and untidiness.

Origins

So, this trend I have dubbed 'Amish Couture'. Sounds so pretentious and pompous but when I explain it to you, you will understand everything!

As you read on the homepage, My trends are based on world war 3 and consequently the end of the world...as we know it. Now, look back to WW1 and WW2...because of the fallout of different countries, supplies of things we have come to find common are always in short supply, rationed or completely unobtainable. There was often power outages and complete isolation from society. What with the advancements in weaponry, terrorism and war... these factors are bound to become worse.

During and after WW2 we saw tailoring for women become much more common because, quite simply, it was practical; women had to work. Those of the women that stayed at home in the country and looked after the evacuated children did not wear suits. Cotton sun dresses, often hand made, were the most common attires. Whilst the few men that stayed behind were seen in their gardening clothes. These were comfortable, yet often tailored to keep their masculinity present.

This style of back to basic living is not really known as 'war living' or any such thing. There is not really a culture left in modern developed society that can reflect truely this living style, or how they dressed.

As naive as this will sound to experts, the most relatable thing I can conceive as being 'world war, back to basics living' is how the Amish people live. Amish culture has recently become current news because of channel 4's documentary programme, 'Living with the Amish'. We see how they work, socialise and dress and it all relates back to the simpler way of life. The Amish rarely use technology or electricity, they do not drive, and they do not use things we take for granted...like running tap water. If another world war was to strike, which I am (depressingly) predicting, then we are likely to resort back to a simpler way of life, like the Amish.

Amish style is fairly minimal. There is a heavy focus on craftmanship and tailoring as all the clothing is hand made, and must be subtle as the Amish way of life is to not cause attention. This style of clothing fits my trend prediction because of the way we will have to live after WW3.

I am mixing the word 'Couture' in with this trend as it is not in our nature as human beings to disregard how we look. Modern society dictates that we should always do what we can to look good, just because of an outbreak of war and destruction, doesn't mean that we as human beings will lose our modern humanity. The Couture side of my trend will be mainly worked through structure of clothing, material and style. There is also of course the fact that we will not simply abolish all of modern technology and strategy. Amish Couture as a lifestyle will be a mix of typical Amish life with what is left from 21st century society. My understanding of this trend is more androgynous and equal, than misogynistic and religious.

In the subsequent blog posts on this page I will be exploring Amish Couture in terms of clothing, explaining what I think this trend will consist of, and how it will be executed as a specific style.
